Our vision is to transform Russell’s waste, from burying it, to using it as a valuable resource.

Russell Recyclers is an incorporated non-profit organisation called Resilient Russell Charitable Trust.

The Trust is a registered charity (CC56638)

We are a volunteer organisation based in Russell in the heart of New Zealand's beautiful Bay of Islands.

What we do

The Trust and our volunteers work with Far North District Council and businesses such as Northland Waste Ltd, NZ Box Ltd and Innocent Packaging to improve recycling, composting, and to implement better waste minimisation practices in Russell Peninsula and surrounds.

Recycling Ambassadors

Russell Recyclers was formed five years ago and we are now well-known recycling ‘ambassadors’ for a number of events in the Bay of Islands such as Birdman, Bay of Islands Ocean Swim Series, Tall Ships and Waitangi Day. We work with Northland Waste who supply and then remove and empty the recycle bins for local events. During the events our volunteers man the recycle bins to educate the public on how to correctly dispose of waste in the correct bins to minimise landfill.

Compostable Cups

We have encouraged organisers of events to use compostable plates and cutlery and our local marae has adopted the policy for all large-scale events. Most of our local eateries are now offering compostable cups and plates supplied by Innocent Packaging for take-away coffee and meals. These are then collected and taken to the community gardens to be added to our hot composting boxes.

Hot Composting at the Community Gardens

We use compost bins generously provided by NZ Box Ltd for a hot composting initiative between the Trust, Russell Community Gardens and DOC. Read more....

Far North Go Green Awards

The inaugural Far North Go Green Awards held at Russell's iconic Duke of Marlborough Hotel on 28 March 2019 was a sellout success! The event was made possible by grants from the Far North District Council Local Community Fund and Creative Communities Scheme. We intend to run the event again in 2020 so watch this space!
